"Wow, I didn't even know that was in the ad account..."

I was on an audit call with a software company and they were in awe of the reports and things that I was sharing.

Small things like looking at matched retargeting audiences and viewing where their impressions were going with their ads.

All things that aren't immediately obvious when starting on LinkedIn Ads.

So this post is going to cover 7 Deadly Sins of Your LinkedIn Ads Account - these 7 things will break your advertising efforts if you don't know about them.

The 7 Deadly Sins

  1. LinkedIn Insight Tag - Install this. Period. This is an absolute must for retargeting people from your advertising campaigns. It is vital to have it installed because, without it, you won't be able to follow up with your prospects that engaged with your ads.

  2. Matched Audiences - Set these up. Don't wait to set them up after your campaign is running. These need to be built before your campaigns run, otherwise they won't populate.

  3. Check your demographic filters after your campaigns start running. It is crucial to check if any companies or job titles are squeezing through your targeting cracks leading to wasted ad spend.

  4. Don't run ads to audiences larger than 10,000. Yep, it's a somewhat hot take - that is pretty dependent on your ICP - but it's generally good to be very narrow, rather than too broad. Being too broad may bring in more clicks - but those clicks aren't quality.

  5. Use Manual Bidding - don't use maximum delivery unless you have AB tested it and have data to prove that it performs better for your campaigns. Manual bidding allows you to control your CPC and have a higher CTR.

  6. Turn off audience expansion and audience networks - this often results in wasted ad spend from people outside your ICP and networks with low intent.

  7. Target "Permanent" Locations - LinkedIn defaults to presence in, instead of permanent locations. Be sure to check this if you like optimizing your campaigns.
